What’s the Difference Between Virtual and Physical SST Cards?

A virtual SST card is a digital version of your SST credential. A physical SST card is a printed plastic card that shows your name, training status, and SST designation.

Important:

The plastic card does NOT replace the DOB system.

If your training is expired or missing in Training Connect, the plastic card alone will not protect you during an inspection.

✔ Your status is verified through NYC DOB Training Connect
✔ Inspectors see:
• Your name
• Card level (Worker / Supervisor)
• Completion & expiration date
• Approved training hours

📌 If your hours are in Training Connect — you are valid, even without a plastic card.

❌ Physical SST Card

Not required — and not enough on its own.

⚠️ A physical card is:
• For convenience only
• Not proof by itself
• Useless if your training is not uploaded correctly

Many construction workers confuse OSHA training with the NYC SST Card — but they serve different purposes.

🔹 OSHA Training
This is the foundation. It teaches core construction safety principles and provides an OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 certificate.
Important: an OSHA certificate does NOT grant site access in NYC.

🔹 NYC SST Card
This is a NYC DOB–mandated requirement. It confirms your required safety hours and allows you to legally enter and work on NYC construction sites.

NYC SST Card Renewal: Rules, Hours & How to Avoid Costly Mistakes

In New York City, an SST Card is valid for 5 years.
To keep working legally on NYC construction sites, it must be renewed on time — or you’ll have to start over from the beginning. Required SST Refresher Hours

🔹 SST Worker Refresher

⏱ 8 hours
Renews your SST Worker Card for another 5 years.

🔹 SST Supervisor Refresher

⏱ 16 hours
8 hours is NOT enough for supervisors.
Supervisors must complete the full 16-hour refresher.

When to Take the Refresher

✔ Before your SST Card expiration date
Best practice: 1–3 months before expiration

Waiting until the last minute can:
• delay system updates
• block site access
• cause unnecessary downtime

What Happens If You Miss the Deadline

❌ SST Card expires
❌ Refresher taken after expiration

👉 Refresher will NOT count

You must start over:
• Worker → 40 hours
• Supervisor → 62 hours
