According to Local Law 10 of 2026, there is now a grace period for renewing SST and Supervisor SST cards. You can renew your card up to 1 year after it expires—as long as you complete the required training hours within the year before the expiration and before submitting your renewal application. 📄

✅ Key points from the official law:

SST cards are valid for 5 years.

Renewal is allowed within 1 year after expiration if all required SST credits are completed in time.

This applies to both SST Worker and SST Supervisor cards.

⚠️ Important: Current DOB pages and FAQs may not yet reflect this change and might still say expired cards cannot be renewed. The law itself, however, officially allows a 1-year grace period.

Your Hard Hat Has an Expiration Date! 🛑🏗️
Most workers in NYC don’t realize their hard hat has an expiration date. If it looks fine, it doesn’t mean it’s safe.
The Rules:
• Shell: Replace every 5 years (every 2 years if exposed to high sun/chemicals).
• Suspension: Replace every 12 months. Sweat and wear weaken the straps.
• After Impact: Toss it immediately. Even without visible cracks, the structural integrity is gone.
🔍 Check Yours Now:
Look for the «date code» stamped inside your helmet (usually a circle with a year/month). If it’s over 5 years old, you’re at risk.
Don’t wait for a DOB inspector to tell you. Your safety is your responsibility.

For an NYC SST Worker Card, the law requires 40 FULL hours of training.

Not 20. Not “fast-track.” Not skipping class time.

❗ If a student does NOT attend the full required hours, the NYC Department of Buildings (DOB) can REVOKE the card during audits or checks.

In New York City, an SST Card is valid for 5 years.
To keep working legally on NYC construction sites, it must be renewed on time — or you’ll have to start over from the beginning. Required SST Refresher Hours

🔹 SST Worker Refresher

⏱ 8 hours
Renews your SST Worker Card for another 5 years.

🔹 SST Supervisor Refresher

⏱ 16 hours
8 hours is NOT enough for supervisors.
Supervisors must complete the full 16-hour refresher.

When to Take the Refresher

✔ Before your SST Card expiration date
Best practice: 1–3 months before expiration

Waiting until the last minute can:
• delay system updates
• block site access
• cause unnecessary downtime
