SST Card Renewal NYC 2026: Grace Period and Updated Safety Requirements

    Updated: 5 days ago

If your SST or Supervisor SST card has expired—or is about to—there’s good news! Local Law 10 of 2026 introduces a 1-year grace period for renewing SST cards, giving construction workers and supervisors more flexibility than ever before.

Construction safety in New York City is evolving, and the 2026 updates to Site Safety Training (SST) reflect a more comprehensive approach to protecting workers. Beyond traditional physical hazards like falls, scaffolding, and heavy equipment, mental health, suicide prevention, and substance misuse awareness are now mandatory for all SST workers and supervisors.

How SST Card Renewal NYC 2026 Works

A major update introduced by Local Law 10 of 2026 is the 1-year grace period for renewing SST and Supervisor SST cards.

    According to the official law:

“Such card expires [five] 5 years after issuance and is renewable for up to 1 year after the expiration date upon a showing by the applicant that such applicant has successfully completed SST credits specified by the department within 1 year prior to the expiration of such card and no later than the submission of such renewal application.” — Local Law 10 of 2026 (nyc.gov)

Key Points About the Grace Period

    • SST cards are valid for 5 years.

    • Cards can now be renewed within 1 year after expiration if all required SST credits—including the 2026 modules on mental health, suicide prevention, and substance misuse—are completed on time.

    • This applies to both worker and supervisor SST cards.

    • Current DOB web pages may not yet reflect this change, but the law officially allows the grace period.

    Why the Grace Period Matters

Previously, if an SST card expired, workers had to repeat the entire course to regain certification. The new SST card renewal NYC 2026 rules save time, reduce stress, and ensure compliance while maintaining safety standards on job sites.

How to Renew Your SST Card

    1. Complete all required SST modules, including the updated 2026 topics.

    2. Submit your renewal application within 1 year of expiration.

    3. Receive your renewed SST card without repeating the full course.

💡 Tip: Even if your card has already expired, you can take advantage of this grace period—plan ahead and complete your updated modules to stay compliant and safe.
